Dug wells are specifically designed to access shallow unconfined aquifers. Being shallow and exposed to the surface, dug wells are particularly vulnerable to contamination from surface sources like road salt, fertilisers, and septic systems. Dug wells have depths between 3 m and 10 m and are prone to drought conditions when the water table drops.
