Dug well – will the shallow unconfined aquifers save us? https://punarbharan.org/shallow-aquifers/ https://punarbharan.org/shallow-aquifers/#respond Sat, 04 Oct 2025 19:52:49 +0000 https://punarbharan.org/?p=2035 Shallow unconfined aquifers are groundwater reservoirs located just below the water table and not confined by impermeable layers above. Dug wells are specifically designed to access shallow unconfined aquifers. Being shallow and exposed to the surface, dug wells are particularly vulnerable to contamination from surface sources like road salt, fertilisers, and septic systems. Dug wells have depths between 3 m and 10 m and are prone to drought conditions when the water table drops.

India – a world leader in groundwater dependence https://punarbharan.org/indias-groundwater-dependence/ https://punarbharan.org/indias-groundwater-dependence/#respond Sat, 04 Oct 2025 19:04:18 +0000 https://punarbharan.org/?p=2023 At about 250 billion cubic meters per year, India is the largest user of groundwater in the world, This is more than the US and China combined, who are #2 and #3 behind India. As a result, more than 60% of India’s districts have critical or overexploited groundwater levels.

What is groundwater? Why is it a fugitive resource? https://punarbharan.org/what-is-groundwater/ https://punarbharan.org/what-is-groundwater/#respond Thu, 02 Oct 2025 21:14:07 +0000 https://punarbharan.org/?p=151 Groundwater is the largest available freshwater resource on earth. It serves the drinking water needs of nearly half of the humanity, including almost everyone who lives in rural areas. The largest use for groundwater is to irrigate crops. In India, about 90% of groundwater is consumed by irrigation alone. At 250 billion cubic meters per year, […]
