Aerators for household taps
Taps on wash-basins and kitchen-sinks typically dispense as much as 18 litres of water per minute. At full-flow, they deliver more than a bucket-full of water within a minute. It would not hurt if a bucket gets filled up fast. But modern lifestyle has turned its back on the bucket. The average residential user, and their house-keeping staff, tend to use the running flow of water under a tap or shower. If the building is taller than 4-5 storeys, the gravity head of the water column tends to push water out at an even higher flow rate.
Tens of litres of water flowing out of taps and faucets per minute can hardly be optimally used. Most of the discharge is lost to the drain. Unfortunately, municipal tap water is more expensive than it is priced* at. More often than not, the water delivered by municipalities is of a good potable quality. Apart from the cost of purification of river/dam waters, and maintenance of water treatment plants, much energy and maintenance money is spent in pumping water to the respective overhead tanks in housing districts across the urban sprawl.
Simple, static aerators can bring the flow rate down to 3 litres per minute, or even less where acceptable. This results in a saving of more than 70% of water. The cumulative effect of aerators on all taps in a household and across an entire colony of hundreds of households is phenomenal saving. It can be easily proven that one household with two taps fitted with aerator plugs, can save an entire tanker-load of water within one year!
Moreover, the saving is actually three-fold. When less water is needed, the cost of pumping water from underground storage tanks to overhead tanks is also saved. The third and less obvious advantage is reduced energy footprint of the respective STPs.
Increasing water-scarcity means showers are generally scorned at. A better-designed low-flow shower head fits the need quite well and can yield about 80% of water saving.
